DESCRIPTION. The GORDON name derives from a farm,
Odegaarden, north of Moelv and 2 kilometers southeast from the Brottum
train station on a hillside facing southwest above Lake Mjosa. On
this map ( See
Map ) it is in the upper left hand corner. The map coordinate
system is 32 ED50-UTM Zone 32, also it appears WGS84 latitude and
longitude is displayed. The detailed topographic map from Statens
Kartverk (using a different datum) is:
Odegaarden: North 333916 East -6740 KS: 3. Datum probably 1
NGO1948 Gauss-K Akse 3.
Brottum train station: North 335164, East -8933. Thats N -1248, E
2193 from train station to farm; straight line distance 2523 meters
east southeast.
Converting Odegaarden to some other map datums will make it useful
to find this farm using GPS:
-
WGS 84 (84 EU89 Geografisk) North
60 deg, 59 min, 53.7 sec. East 10 deg, 35 min, 36.2
sec. The top of the Moelv map is
exactly 61 degrees. Use this one for GPS most likely.
-
UTM: 23 EU89 UTM Zone 33, North:
6770613 East: 261776.
-
UTM: 32 ED50-UTM Zone 32: North 6763851, East 586259 (this is
the grid numbers you see on the map).

Good resource:
Copy of 1885 Shely Census, 1885 .
The township is "Shely" (one L). Note: it is reportedly a
transcription and contains a few errors. Gordon is shown as "Gorden"
but this is actually a better anglicized form of Odegaarden than is
Gordon. H.L. Gorden, Kjerstine Gorden, Martin Gorden, Anthony Gorden,
Clara Gorden, Bennet Gorden, Kate Gorden. Kate is most likely the
daughter of Charles Nils Gordon, born Julia Kate Gordon.
Copy of 1890 Special Census , enumerating
veterans and post offices. Hans Larson is now appearing with an
alias, Hans L. Gordon.

SUMMARIZED BIOGRAPHIES
(Written by Charles N. Gordon for the 1938 Gordon Clansman
See photographs of Granum Farm in
1988 , the place Hans Larson emigrated from.
HANS LARSON GORDON: Born near Storhammar, Hedemarken, Norway
on Oct. 11, 1821, and died on his homestead near Shelly, Minnesota
on May 3, 1904. At the time of his death, therefore, he had reached
the age of 82 years, 7 months, and 14 days. Mr. Gordon emigrated to
America with his wife and five children about the middle of May, 1860.
After a wearisome journey of six weeks and 2 days on the Atlantic in a
sailing vessel the family reached Quebec, Canada on the 3rd day of
July, 1860. They settled near Onalaska -- now a suburb of La Crosse,
Wisconsin -- where the family resided for a period of eleven years.
In 1871 the family, including several members, took up homesteads on
the banks of the Marsh River in western Minnesota. Here Mr. Gordon
spent the remainder of his life with the exception of a few years when
he and his wife resided in Tennessee. During the Civil War Mr. Gordon
served with the 52 - Second Wisconsin Infantry. He also served the
Government as a mail carrier for some time. He died as a result of
rheumatic fever.
CHRESTI GORDON (nee Nelson): Born in Norway on September 14,
1826, and died at her home near Shelly, Minnesota on April 5, 1911.
She reached the ripe old age of 84 years, 6 months, and 21 days. She
often served her neighborhood in the capacity of a mid-wife, and was
considered quite an authority on simple home remedies we have been
informed. We have been told that Chresti was considered a very
beautiful woman in her younger days. The immediate cause of her death
was heart failure. So far as we have been able to ascertain her
maiden name was Nelson or Nilson since her father's name was Nils.
However, some believe her name was Larson. We may have more to add to
these brief biographies in our next issue Of the Gordon Clan bulletin.
