Career Objectives and Salary

Currently employed.  It's hard to beat working and living in Logan.  I am well suited to small and medium size business where personal responsibility combined with diverse technical and communication skills are useful and needed. I have a high degree of employer loyalty and personal integrity. I have salary expectations, depending on tasks and location, varying from $45,000 to $110,000 per year.

Summary

I currently serve three roles: (additional details in chronological section)

1. System Administrator; two sites each with two racks of physical and virtual servers. Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and 2008; Linux. VMware and XenServer virtualization environments.
2. I provide configuration management on a corporate Wide Area Network. This includes management, monitoring and documentation.  
   
3. When not engaged in networking, I am senior helpdesk (tier 3) in a corporate helpdesk environment.
   
4. As time permits and needs dictate, I provide photographic, CAD, and graphic arts services for the company.

I have been engaged in data processing, programming and telecommunications for a long time.  

My 22 year Navy career (1972-1994) was primarily tactical, mostly computer related.   From then to the present I have been engaged in a combination of network and Windows domain administration and corporate information technology support. 

Concurrently with the above, I developed and maintained excellence in photography and technical writing. For many years my photographs were marketed by Aperture Photobank in Seattle, which is now a division of Tony Stone Agency. I produced a few brochures and World Wide Web pages on a variety of topics. I published the nonprofit Stereoscopy Magazine from 1995 through 1997 which is the journal for the International Stereoscopic Union. I possess commercial and amateur FCC radio licenses and utilize a variety of electronic and communications test equipment.

I have configured Cisco, Ascend and other routers; Cabletron and Netgear ethernet hubs and switches. I presently utilize Linux-based network "sniffing" tools, and have used Data General Sniffer to troubleshoot IP and IPX network problems. I understand SDLC physical communications fairly well and have utilized several models of Datascope (T-Berd and Firebird) to monitor communications problems on V.35 56kbps SDLC circuits. (Serial communications experience is starting to be a bit outdated I suppose)
• Workstations: MacIntosh (UNIX and Mac-OS), MS-DOS, Windows and several flavors of UNIX.
• Computer programming in C some Linux/Unix shell scripting.  This is primarily utility programming, small fast applications 12k lines and under.  My recent project is a helpdesk system that interfaces with MySQL (ticket storage) and Microsoft SQL (Cisco Call Manager interface).

• I was the Director of Technical Support at Digital Planet and at CacheNET I held a similar title and function, offering support for approximately 700 customers at Cachenet, and 1,100 customers at Digital Planet, and briefly supported PC Fastnet's customers concurrently. Staff size varied but typically three sysadmin/tech support persons and two or more dedicated to telephone answering and helpdesk tech support
• Developed, and continue to develop, training methods and documents in support of network and computer applications.  These tutorials and aids exist in print and website.
  
• Considerable over-the-phone support experience.
• Chairman, District Advancement Committee, Boy Scouts of America. Old Ephraim District, Trapper Trails Council (3/2009 to present, and a member of the same committee from 6/2004). This committee of approximately 16 persons interviews all Eagle Scout candidates in this city and also reviews all Eagle projects.

  • Tony Stone Agency markets my eagle photographs. These photographs have been used by Boeing and IBM, among others.
• Network Physical and LAN/WAN Topology Charts. I use Corel Draw for these charts; it is ideal for the purpose. Corel Draw is a general purpose drawing and charting program that can make almost anything. This avoids the burden of having to remember dozens of different programs, one for each specialized type of chart. It can work in Layers, do dimenionshing; like a CAD program, it can produce highly artistic logos, and it is vector based and infinitely scalable.
