A waterfall at Thingvellir. "Thing" is a government body, somewhat like parliament or congress; "vellir" is a flat place, probably related to the English word "vale". This cliff bounds the western edge of the annual meeting place of Iceland's chiefs, and the law-giver or law-speaker would recite the laws for all to hear.
