Adak, Alaska 2000 -- Page 5
- View north-northwest toward Mount Moffett, from the fields
at the east side, south end of the runway.
- The Commissary (on the left) and Navy Exchange
(on the right) and the day care center in the background.
West of the exchange/commissary (the view is to the north)
was Kuluk Gym, with a large basketball court and bowling alley,
north of that was the hospital, north of the hospital was
McDonald's Restaurant. Most of this cluster of buildings is
relatively new, built in the 1970's and 1980's.
- Michael Gordon's scale model of Adak Island hanging in the
Fish & Wildlife building.
- Caribou jawbones at the Fish & Wildlife building. Notice
Bill Wiseman's photographs of the introduction of caribou on
Adak; these photographs can be seen online in the Bill Wiseman
collection of Orneveien.org.
- Bering Hill as seen from the Fish & Wildlife building
near the east side of the south end of the runway.
- Lupines; beautiful and common on Adak.
- Mount Moffett. The roof of Yakutat Hangar is barely visible
in the bottom. Doubtless photographed from Sweeper Cove, the
location of the shipping piers.
- A frozen squid.
- The new concrete pier.
- Fishing boats (crab, squid boats) tied up at the pier.
- The older wooden pier eastward, which was the main operating
pier in the 1970's
