The Larry Chatman Panoramic Photographs

Return to Larry's Adak Homepage

Up close and personal with Mount Adagdak, northeastern Adak island.
Excellent panorama from 1996 or so. Notice the newer buildings that most of us have not seen before. Built, then abandoned. It won't be long before the williwaw blows them down.
Rocks at the beach. Sunbathing, anyone?
Castle Rocks near the Loran Station, northeastern tip of Adak
A fantastic view of Kanaga Volcano, west of Adak.
From Castle Rocks, in the distance (left) is Kanaga Volcano. In the farthest distance a bit to the right is Tanaga Volcano.
Near the top of Mount Moffett.
Mount Moffett has three major ridges from its summit. This view is made from the usual approach from the southeast, up from the "ski lodge" and is looking at a ridge aimed southwest. The summit is at the far right, but actually the mountain has several summits close together.
A beautiful view of Mount Moffett as seen from the south, probably at the old White Alice radio repeater site overlooking Shagak Bay. The southwest ridge is at the left, and the ascent route is on the ridge at the right. The valley between is deep and steep; one can roll a boulder down it, and the boulder will spin so fast that it explodes.
A spectacular view northward from the summitt of Moffett. Okay, not so much to see, but the fact of being undisputably on the summitt -- and being able to see anything at all -- is quite spectacular.
Looking the other way, view south overlooking Shagak Bay and the rest of Adak, from the top of Mount Moffett. Cool, no?
Halfway up Mount Moffett is the remains of a plane crash. Other crashes are also on the island, this photo looks like the picked-over remains of what I'd heard was a P2-V or something like that. You find it by being a little off-course to the south heading from the ski lodge up to the summitt of Mount Moffett. Being off course is really easy since visibility is usually pretty crappy from 800 feet up to about 4000 feet is a nearly permanent cloud layer. Consequently, while plenty of people found this crash, not too many were able to say exactly where it was!
