I was stationed on Adak from February, 1976 to August 1977. I worked for Ship's Division as an engineer on the tugboats. Because one of the boats went to Seattle for refit in 1977 and the other one was unreliable, we ran our boat pretty much every day of the summer and fall of 1976 and most days even during the winter. We saw a tremendous amount of Aleutian landscape on various islands, and trekked all over the coastal parts. We once started climbing Great Sitkin, but got called back to do a search and rescue. We once hid out in Hidden Bay on a "day off" because that was the only place we could not be reached by radio.
I could go on for way too long. Suffice it to say that my year and a half on Adak was the adventure of a lifetime and really changed me and my entire outlook on the world.
